Heh. In my experience, people who call the UI lifestyle (or the welfare
lifestyle, or whatever) "comfortable" have never really had to endure
it, and have probably never known anyone who has.

I know that this discussion is not about California, but...

When I was laid off several years ago from the company I worked for
then, I was forced to go onto Unemployment. At the time, UI paid about
$200 per week (as of this month, it's up to $300 per week). That was in
1995. The $800 per month I was getting barely covered my rent (which
was already as cheap as I could get, and I was still sharing with two
other people), food, and medical care that I need for my severe asthma.
  I wound up taking a part-time job to supplement my income from UI;
and, of course, if you earn any money under UI, the amount you earn in a
week is deducted from that week's UI payment.

Now imagine trying to pay mortgage on that kind of income. Imagine
trying to make car payments so that you can get to where your job
interviews are. Imagine trying to pay for prescription medications.
Imagne trying to raise a family.

And, of course, bear in mind that your UI runs out in six months.

People have the oddest ideas of what constitutes "comfortable".
