And, regardless of what the "how to find a job" books and classes tell you, in many cases one cannot spend 40 hours per week looking for a new job. Unless you live in a very large metropolitan area, there are generally only a limited number of local employers who might potentially employ you, especially if your training and expertise is in some specific technical area. Sometimes it's just a matter of "going through the motions" until an opening at one of those companies becomes available. And few people are likely to hire you for some other job in the meanwhile because they (perhaps rightly) feel that you will leave as soon as a higher-paying job in your field does become available. Waiting, especially when your bank account is hemorrhaging and nothing positive seems to be happening, is depressing. So "keeping up one's spirits" while searching for a job is important.
