Speaking personally, I found it offensive, but I also figured it was a one-time comment. So rather than speak up, I "let it slide", and assumed it wouldn't happen again -- and it didn't for almost two months. The next time it happened (I thought) when John made the comment he did I opened my mouth. ....and promptly stuck my foot in it. Jeroen comments a lot onlist that he's been likened to a Nazi before, so I get the feeling that the two recent comments don't exist in a vacuum.
