Why does being an employee of the Defense Department mean that I must be aware of those concepts? (I *am* aware of them, but that is irrelevant here.) I work for them, but as a civilian employee, not a military one. My job has nothing to do with border defense (at least, not directly), politics and geography. As an ICT administrator and User Support guy I get paid to keep computer systems and networks up and running and solve problems that occur on those systems. Basically it is the same job as my counterparts in the business world have; my employer just happens to be the Defense Department.
