Let me offer a possible explanation here.

Over the years, people have repeatedly said JDG holds a black-and-white 
world view and does not see there are actually many shades of grey. 
Personally, I think that is still the case. Considering any and all 
criticism of something he loves dearly (the US) to be "bashing" and not 
seeing it as legitimate criticism fits that profile perfectly.

Note that JDG himself defines bashing as "gratuitous attacks on US foreign 
policy, no matter what they do".

Also note that he launches similar attacks on Europe, but considers *that* 
to be legitimate criticism and not Europe-bashing.
