Its not a bad gesture, imho.. I wish tho that I lived in a country where swearing on 
anything you held sacred would be publicly accepted.  I mean, if I were to be elected 
(ha!) to something more glorious than "Weigher of Coal[0]" I'd want to be sworn in on, 
say, a stack of Plato perhaps. :)

[0]  I did actually hold the position of "Weigher of Coal" in my hometown back in 
Vermont.  Its a legacy governmental position left over from the 1800's.  I was 
appointed when no one else at Town Meeting had stuck around until the bitter end (they 
all left after the school budget passed..)
