Yes, it's stupid both on the part of Packard Bell (given the fact
that "recovery paritions" are both unhelpful and legally VERY dubious
(recovery CD's are just as annoying but on better legal grounds...),
on the part of PC World for selling it and on the part of the buyer
for not consulting a techie friend on what TO buy.

The **** things give me lots of tech work, mind you.

At least you need never worry about going hungry . . .

After years of hearing hard drive crash horror stories, I have decided that every hardware company should:

a) print "BACKUP!!!" in big letters all over their towers and keyboards, and come up with some cool wallpaper in a "BACKUP!!!" motif as a reminder.

b) Set up their systems so that they will force the user to backup, say, once a month. Very advanced users would be able to turn this function off.
Novices wouldn't.

So, would you mandate the inclusion of a tape drive on every machine? A CD-R only holds 600-700MB, which means it would take a lot of CDs and a long time to do a full backup of a contemporary 100GB drive.

(Don't even joke about doing it on Zip disk or floppy . . .)

And what about those times when you have to reinstall Windows repeatedly before it will finally accept the backup of your old system files rather than wanting to start out with a clean slate? (BT, DT, obviously.)
