As long as you have the full application CD's, then all you need is 
data backup, which for most people CAN be stored on CD-RW. Oh, and 
drivers, etc, which can be updated say once every 2 months. I don't 
feel that spending an hour every other month is too much for that.

I admitedly fill 1 CD every 3 weeks or so, but then again I do little 
renders, amature scifi videos, HUGE 3d models, etc.

This is why you backup DATA files only. You install OS and apps, then 
just drop your data files straight back in. A LOT easier than playing 
arround with "full system restore" apps which often fail to work 
ANYWAY.
