My friend's father, who is downright *phobic* about hospitals and
doctors, was experiencing some symptoms my friend thought might be a
heart attack. Both his parents pooh-poohed it, but my friend called
911, and if he hadn't, his father would have had his heart stop when
there *wasn't* the equipment handy to try to restart it. (He flatlined
between the original hospital the EMS took him to and the
heart-specialist hospital in the same city, but they got him going
again, and he's still alive.)

I said last year was one of my best ever, everything went my way even with my car getting hit. This year is already turning out not as good, and this discussion has a certain eeriness to it. A few things happened before today, and this morning my kitchen pipes are frozen*. But the most important, while he's fine now, my brother had a episode at work Thursday. Out of nowhere his right shoulder was throbbing with pain. He was literal crying. Of course, he refused any help and offers to go to a hospital or an ambulance. Instead he finished his day and drove three hours back home.

This will sound callous, but usually I say to my friends that this will be the year that his lifestyle finally catches up with him. Maybe it's to insulate myself in case something does happen. But the last year he was trying a little to be healthier and it has been working somewhat. But now this and he won't go to the hospital.

Just venting.

The hot water pipe is free now, just waiting for the cold one.
