_Use of Weapons_ is definitely my favourite of his novels. The best
place to start is probably _The Player of Games_. For what it's worth,
I wasn't impressed with _Consider Phlebas_ and failed to finish it the
second time round. The appendices are very good though. Another of my
favourites is _The Bridge_, which hovers somewhere between sf and
mainstream.

He seems to me to be slowly becoming less good, so anything old is on
average likely to be better than anything new, alas.

Please Andy don't think Use of Weapons is a bad book*. As Rich says, it is most everyone's favorite. When I was first on our subordinate list, The Culture**, I couldn't understand what everyone was referring to when they talked about UoW, why the book was so wonderful/horrid. But now I know, as you will too.

I read Excession first and I thought it was a good book. Maybe a little long but I certainly liked some of the hard scifi stuff, like the ship that became a giant engine and how it moved through space, or in and out of space.

I liked CP a lot more than TPoG but YMMV.
