Of course they could, They could house the crew in the Space Station
for a while and send _another_ shuttle to get them.

Any engineer worth its diploma would have planned each shuttle
flight with Murphy's law in mind, and he would have made a 
rescue team be always ready to go.


OTOH, I bet the explanation for the disaster might turn out to
be some piloting blunder, like using feet and miles instead of
metric.
