But seriously.. do the news channels (MSNBC, Fox, CNN, etc.) *have* to run the same video over and over and over and over? Using the same footage without adding anything new? The news channels have the habit of feeding like vultures over these situations. And I'm not even going into the effect irresponsible coverage has on the unsuspecting innocents who remain glued to repeated showings of the incident. That's what I love about the BBC: when an event such as this happens, they'll interrupt their scheduled programming for an extra news program, tell their audience what happened, and then return to the scheduled programming. No constant reruns of the same footage for the next umpteen hours, no interviews with every Tom, Dick and Harry, but a one-time interruption when disaster strikes, and then just the regular news programs (unless there is more news that really can't wait till the next regular news program).
Another thing that ticks me off is that they start interviewing every Tom, Dick and Harry that may not even be remotely linked to the topic being debated, just to fill airtime between repeated showings of the video. This type of coverage reminds me of SNL's classic parody of "Buckwheat's Assasination Coverage". I think SNL hit the nail on the head with that sketch.
Off my soapbox..
I think the US television networks could learn a lot from the BBC...
