I was told, by sources that shall remain nameless,
that you shoot *until the assailant stops attacking
you* - which coincidentally happens when they're dead.


That is what police are taught to do. With a modern semi-automatic, like a Glock, frex, that essentially means emptying the entire magazine, because it takes less time to squeeze the trigger fifteen (.40-cal) or seventeen (9mm) times than it takes a mortally wounded person to fall to the ground from a standing position.

[BTW, this is why the innocent man -- sorry, I can't recall his name at the moment -- in NYC was shot 40+ times by police: they had been taught to keep firing until the person they were firing at was on the ground and no longer a threat, so all 4(?) officers basically emptied their magazines into him.]
