No birthday, here, but I just bought a digital camera also (to use for our baby's imminent arrival)... anyway, what'd ya get?
HP 720 (3.3 megapixel, 16 MB memory, 12x zoom (3x optical, 4x digital)). What did you spend your money on?
I you venture into multiplayer with half life, I recommend the Team Fortress Classic (TFC) mod. It's not realism-based liked Counterstrike is, but it's a blast to play.
I have most of that stuff. I bought the Half-Life Generation 4-CD set, which also included Opposing Force, Counterstrike, and Blue Shift, plus Team Fortress and some other mods (haven't installed them yet, so I can't tell you which ones right now).
Now all I need is a year off from work so I can play all those games. :-)
And after that, five more years off from work to play all those other games I've bought in the last few years but haven't gotten around to play extensively. :-)

Ouch! Why is it so much slower? ADSL near me is very competitive with cable internet speeds, and often considered superior.
It's the money, really. The 256/64 Kb package is considerably cheaper than cable, and other packages (512/256 and better) are all more expensive than cable. Cable costs EUR 49.95 per month, which I find to be a bit (too) much for what I use Internet for (I'll be paying EUR 27.95 per month for ADSL in the first year, EUR 34.95 after that). Until last May my employer paid almost half of my Internet subscription costs, which made cable nice and cheap for me, but then some pencil pushers decided that it was against some regulation to contribute in the costs of employees' private Internet connection and stopped the money flow.
Can't compare ADSL vs. cable speed, BTW -- Chello doesn't provide information about their connection speed. But hey, if the ADSL package I got turns out to be too slow, I can always upgrade.
