Wow, great responses. I guess I should tell you all I have an autistic nephew and my sister sends some articles she comes across to keep the family thinking/a bit more educated. One of the reasons I shared it was that the topic has seemed charged/personal sometimes in the past and this seemed rather neutral for those of us who aren't as "read" as others.
Even working with "different-ability" people every day, I don't read about autism on a regular basis (although if I continue in the role of potential care giver for my nephew I will be learning for a solid week over the next year). My sister has done a great job with my nephew over the past year and they are already hoping that early intervention will allow reclassification in less than 2 years if his current presentation holds/continues. He has gone from no words (at 2 and 1/2) to over a hundred (and simple sentences) in under a year. I actually see him as what others consider "normal", since I figure we all have things that make us unique/things that take more energy than others. Thanks for continuing to broaden my horizons, Dee _______________________________________________ http://www.mccmedia.com/mailman/listinfo/brin-l
