Oh yes, one more point. I don't have the quotes close at hand (they're in the last chapter of _Diplomat in Carpet Slippers_, the seminal study of the Lincoln Administration's foreign policy) but the Civil War was avidly watched by British Liberals and Conservatives. Gladstone said, after the war, something along the lines that the North's victory in the war made further democratic reforms in Britain possible, and without that victory they would not have happened. So not only did the North's victory assure the survival of American democracy - it had a pretty important impact on the development of _British_ democracy as well. ===== Gautam Mukunda [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Freedom is not free" http://www.mukunda.blogspot.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
