It's startling to travel over *any* portion of US 66 and imagine how it must have been to drive it when it was new. And how damned terrifying it must have been to get passed in the opposing lane by a massive truck … especially given the lack of seat belts, airbags or even really bright headlights.

The road was incredibly narrow.


Out here it's a frontage road. And in Heinlein's "Waldo", a character is talking about the now-superceded Pennsylvania Turnpike with nostalgia, "Six lanes, and as smooth as a baby's bottom." Uncle Bob meant three lanes each way, not twelve lanes total. I've driven a highway that is (for a few miles) eight lanes each way.
