Try a few drops of peppermint oil on the paths they take. Just about
anything strong enough to disrupt their smell of the chemical path they
follow will do, but peppermint oil doesn't smell terribly bad as long as
it's not too strong. A few will be stupid/brave enough to walk over the
peppermint oil and they will do quite a raindance.

I have successfully stopped droves of large black ants from coming inside
via cracks in the foundation by squirting this in the crack.

I've found that this also works well for keeping ants off of bird feeders by
smearing on the lower part of the pole.

This is much safer (and cheaper) than using ant poison :-)
