Hi again BD,

My original point wasn't about tournament costs but only to shed
some light on the slow entry to tournaments this year. Nevertheless
since it has steered itself in that direction...
Here's some stats to stir into the pot...

Tour fees over the past 3 years and the TDs. Yeah I'm a big nerd.
If Alex from Skunks and Bisto could do me a favour and fill
in the 2003 Tour2&3 figures that'd be excellent.

                2002 2003 2004
Tour 1 145 145 150
Tour 2 80 150
Tour 3 125-145 160
Tour 4 100-125 140

                2002 2003 2004
Tour 1 .... Bristol (Adam and Matt) ......
Tour 2 Kevin Lowe Bisto Nolan
Tour 3 Stig Alex (Skunks) Hannah and Christian Nistri
Tour 4 Leeds .... Andy (Edinburgh) ....

So while Tour 1 seems pretty consistent between 2002 and 2004
there's some significant bumps on the price of other Tours.

I do sort of fear that next year will the price go up again.
If we follow this trend we'll all be paying almost 300 a Tour
by 2010.

Some more calcs on tournaments...
Lets say 150 a team and given tour A and B about 40 teams.
That's a budget of 6000 quid or maybe a bit less if you let
your own team in for free.

Ok so perhaps you're booking pitches in London like Nationals
last year. Maybe that's about 3000. That's a pretty large
estimate but it is london after all. Few TDs pay that much.
Now you've got 3000 left to get portaloos, and a DJ and score
boards and cones (free for Tour events) which is about as far
as most events go and can be done in a few phone calls. There
is the work of a schedule (UKU provided for sanctioned events)
and organisation on the weekend which can be a lot of work. That
leaves a little money (about 2000 quid) to pocket. A month's
salary for a well paid full time person. That is assuming a London
set of pitches. Nottingham pitches (and I imagine most others)
don't cost that.

As for indoor tournaments, these are often run by money conscious
students and the cost of the halls is annoyingly expensive.
You get less teams than at an outdoor event to cover the costs yet
you rarely see an indoor event with a price over 100 per team.

So pound to pitchtime schmindoor events aren't great but have
their place (although some would argue). 15 for a weekend of outdoor
ultimate sounds like a good deal though. Then again why not 20. Still
sounds like a good deal really. It all adds up though. Depending on where
you are travel costs can be pretty high and saving a tenner
here and there across a whole team can do a lot to help with other
costs and hopefully encourage more distant teams to come to an event.

Anyhow there was some UKU talk (I think) about having more visibility
on bids. I think that'd be nice. Perhaps the little outline above
about how much pocket or team money you can make if you're lucky enough
to stumble upon a venue big enough will encourage more bids for next
season (which perhaps might bring prices down?).

I'm not sure how you can say that "tournament fees are getting a little out of
control". These days most teams have around 12 to 15 players and often a lot more. A
150 tournament fee translates to around 10/15 each, I don't think this is an
unreasonable request for anything up to 6/7 hours pitch time, the use of all the
facilities available (changing rooms, showers, camping etc) plus a space for a party
on the Saturday. What else can you do for a whole weekend that only costs you 15?!

TDs are entitled to make a little money from organising big events, for all the
organising and hassle they have to take - especially as there were very few bids for
tournaments this year. I think we were in danger of only having 3 Tours at one point.
If more bids came in than maybe we could have some sort of price war but until that
time I think 150ish represents very good value!

It's indoor tournaments that are the rip-off, there are often entry fees of over 120
and for that you get to sit around most of the day and get a total of an hour and a
halfs play over the weekend, if you're lucky. To be fair, this is largely due to the
fact that hiring whole sports halls for a weekend is very expensive.

BD,
how about we actually see the reduced tournament fees which were
spoken about before the formation of the UKUA. As I remember it one of the
reasons for paying an individual fee was that it would reduced tournament
fees by removing the old BUF tax. Having helped run University Outdoor
Nationals this year I know how much work is involved, and also that it is
quite possible to make a decent profit from a team fee of under 100 per
team at a large tournament. I understand that people want to be paid for
their work but tournament fees are getting a little out of control. All I
ask is that TD's take a look at their profit margin and try to find a
balance between making money and giving something to the sport we all love.
Did I mention Tour 1? ;-)
