Steve et al, I agree to a certain extent, but I don't think the issue is tournament costs. The calendar is crowded, and for those clubs with large memberships, it is a lot of money, however, what it really requires is forward planning.
LeedsLeedsLeeds have two open, a women's, and a mixed (we would have two mixed if one of them didn't call itself GB A!) team. Realising this was going to be hard to manage, we sat down shortly after Nationals last year and made an assessment of how much our outgoings were likely to be over the coming season and charged membership (in advance) accordingly. I don't think its unreasonable for people to pay upfront, and we've found its a lot easier than collecting at every training session/tournament. We can't be the only team to do this....
