Absolutely... if the entry capacity for Nationals is so large that you don't
really need to meet any qualification criteria (effectively, teams needed only
to have participated in 1 Mixed Tour to particpate in Mixed Nationals this year
- will Open* turn out the the same?) then it's heading for "just another
tournament", albeit a different format.

IMHO, this is something that needs to be reveiwed and taken into account by the
appropriate Committees & UKUA Board before requesting bids.

Another issue that I think needs to be taken into account is the number of
teams that may qualify but choose not to attend Nationals, and how much further
down the rankings the qualification should extend. e.g. do you invite rank 37
if enough teams choose not to attend a 32 team event?

I don't mean this as a dig at past or present administration, but think that
it's something that should be high on the list in future planning.

The easiest way to avoid it would be to restrict the entry to Nationals
to the top16 teams and make it the prestige tournament it should
be..........same for open.

Unfortunately we always seem to get greedy and try and get as many teams
in as possible, which waters down the pleasure at having won your place
as well as throwing up all these scheduling issues.

Great tournament Skunks.

Subject: [BD] Thoughts on Mixed Nationals

Some quick points about Mixed Nationals:

Rule 1.B.1 from the UKUA Mixed Tour Rules states, "The format for
Mixed Nationals will give an equal chance to every
team entering the tournament." I am wondering if forcing teams 11-22
to play an extra play-in game, and then having them play their round
of 16 game an hour or so later is really an "equal chance"?

The easiest remedy for this would have been to push back the round of
16 games until after lunch to allow teams that played early games a
proper recovery period. I'll concede that the higher seeded teams
have earned a bye, but a little rest seems fair for the teams in the
teens.

Also, I think the strict rules about camping are a small price to pay
for using a fabulous facility with easy access by all modes of
transport. And the rules make sense if you run a University sports
ground.

Overall, a first-class tournament. Congrats, Andy and the rest of the
organizers!
