Sorry... the main point of my last mail lost meaning as the original subject
was related to mixed not open, so while backtracking madly I'll try and save
some face by suggesting that the same format as for open tour be used in the
future for the mixed tour if this becomes necessary with team numbers, but
leave nationals as it is. Let as many teams enter as the venue can cope with
even if that means they qualify by only attending 1 tour event.

sanctioned event and to let them see what it is like playing at that level? To
put it crudely UK ultimates equivalent of the FA Cup.

Surely if the venue (this being the key point) can host 32 teams then great,
the top teams in the UK get 1 or 2 games against lower ranked teams they
wouldn't usually play, before getting back to the business end of their season.
Just because these games may seem meaningless to them don't think they are
meaningless to those teams ranked at the bottom end of uk ultimate or new
comers to the game getting to see just how good the sport can be at the top
level and what they can aspire to.

We'll be top ten this time next year anyway so it won't matter. Or we'll
just sneak in through the back door as usual. We're happy to bribe.

Can see the point in making the Nationals top 16 but I'm glad we got to
take part. It was an excellent tournament and we took a lot from it.
Perhaps the idea of making it a two tiered tournament with top 16 and
bottom 16 holds some value. Seeing as you only got 22 teams though, it
seems that the demand isn't there.

Great tournament, great venue, great organisation and I even got a
massage for my weary body for a fiver. Bargain.

Bit disappointed that there wasn't some sort of specialist eye clinic on
site given my injury but you live and learn. Next time I'll use my hands
to catch the disc.

Thanks for the hard work. Very much appreciated by the Galahs (Spirit
and Spoon Winners 2006 TM). Fear us.

The easiest way to avoid it would be to restrict the entry to Nationals
to the top16 teams and make it the prestige tournament it should
be..........same for open.

Unfortunately we always seem to get greedy and try and get as many teams
in as possible, which waters down the pleasure at having won your place
as well as throwing up all these scheduling issues.

Great tournament Skunks.

Subject: [BD] Thoughts on Mixed Nationals

Some quick points about Mixed Nationals:

Rule 1.B.1 from the UKUA Mixed Tour Rules states, "The format for
Mixed Nationals will give an equal chance to every
team entering the tournament." I am wondering if forcing teams 11-22
to play an extra play-in game, and then having them play their round
of 16 game an hour or so later is really an "equal chance"?

The easiest remedy for this would have been to push back the round of
16 games until after lunch to allow teams that played early games a
proper recovery period. I'll concede that the higher seeded teams
have earned a bye, but a little rest seems fair for the teams in the
teens.

Also, I think the strict rules about camping are a small price to pay
for using a fabulous facility with easy access by all modes of
transport. And the rules make sense if you run a University sports
ground.

Overall, a first-class tournament. Congrats, Andy and the rest of the
organizers!
