Students can create a user page on our wiki and start a log of your progress
there. See the checklist for details and examples from prior students.

Yes, a significant and meaningful code modification is required for several
reasons.

First, to evaluate any proposal, we need strong evidence of ability to read and
update the code being proposed for change. Seeing other code someone has
written is not a reliable measure for this (and it’s far easier to write one's
own code than it is to read and update code written by others). Second, GSoC
is a highly competitive program with very limited slots and we’re only
interested in the students that are committed to working hard for the duration.
This includes putting in significant time and effort on their applications,
during the bonding period, during the GSoC coding window, and after.

It doesn’t mean that your patch/pull request has to be awesome (never hurts),
but we will see it as a reflection of your ability, availability, and
commitment; and it will be used to evaluate how reasonable your proposal
objectives seem.

Cheers!
Sean
