I didn't run it in the 'fridge, just chilled it down so that it was close 
to 0C at the start of the run.

The drive in question went from completely disappearing from the bus 
(wouldn't even respond to smart commands or id checks) after just a few 
reads to sitting there for nearly an hour as I grabbed several hundreds 
of megs of data off it.
