I actually ran the drive (still in ziplock bag) metal side down on a 
wine chiller pack. My best guess (and it is just a guess) is that as 
the drive warmed, one of the chips failed, or maybe a solder joint 
opened. With the drive kept cool, it worked long enough to get the data 
off it.

A few days later, the drive's owner dropped off a case of nice wine. 
Now, if the ddrescue author had a tip jar ...
