I thought that LaTeX was also kinda supported by Texinfo, isn't it?
A decade or so ago we tried to subsitute LaTeX markup for Texinfo
markup but found that LaTeX is oriented towards high resolution
typesetting. It works badly with with character-only online output,
which you need to make your documentation widely available.
Texinfo --> Info works for the blind, for people installing systems
(no X windows yet), for people using telnet, for people using a slow
link, for people with old hardware, for people doing strange searches.
