If I remember correctly, UEFI works fine as long as CSM is enabled but I
am not positive at the moment. I would have to look at my settings. I
would suggest you backup and reinstall with UEFI which provides efifb(4)
and then you could use wsfb(4) as well (with the xorg.conf I posted
previously). Using wsfb(4) is much faster than vesa(4) as well.

If you do not want to do that or if you want to do more tests first, you
could also try starting up top(1) immediately after exiting X and see if
some process is using a lot of CPU or something. Also, have you tried
pinging your system when it appears to be frozen. If that works, can you
try accessing it via ssh? If those do not work, it seems likely to be a
true hard freeze. Others with more suggestions will probably have to
comment here since I am not sure what other ways would work best to try
to narrow down what might be causing a hard freeze. If you are willing
to do the reinstall, I think you will end up with a better experience
overall and hopefully your freeze will disappear. I am running most of
my desktop and laptop systems with UEFI now and have had no issues. I
still use traditional booting for servers at this point since there is
no advantage as of yet to UEFI booting for servers.
