i have done it both ways over the years. i had an icom 756 pro and an icom 821h. then i decided i wanted a new radio and sold both and bought the icom ic-9100. the ic-9100 is working well on hf but i do not like having 2 vfo's like the 756 pro had. makes it difficult when in a pile up to find a clear spot, always have to hit a/b to listen to other spot, tune and jump back. also the 756 pro had a really nice scope to see nulls to fit yourself into. the ic-9100 interfaces well with satpc32 for satellite work. also interfaces with my logging program.

that being said, you have to take a look at the features you find you need and then get the radio/radios that meet those needs. an all round radio has more limitations than specific radios. the all round radio will be less expensive than purchasing 2 radios. i think my next radio to supplement the ic-9100 for hf will be an ic-7700.

Hello all,

I am SURE I'm about to open a can of worms here, but I want the advice from those I feel most knowledgeable. that being BVARC membership.

I was all ready to buy a new Yaesu FT-991 (the FT-897D replacement) and a friend of mind talked me out of it, at least temporarily.

I want to be able to do HF with a decent rig and also be able to Satellite and VHF/UHF SSB and weak signal work.

So know I'm wondering if the shack in the box is the best way to go (TS-2000, FT-991, IC-9100, etc.) or to go with two boxes, one for HF up to 6m or 10m (FT-1200 or FTDX-3000) and another box, perhaps a Yaesu FT-847 (supposedly renown for satellite and weak signal work).

I'd like advice, suggestions, issue that I might not have thought about, about the best way to spend my money.

I've spent the last two months upgrading antennas, now I feel it's my rig (FT-897D) is holding me back, at least HF wise.

All thoughts, advice, suggestions, flames and insults are welcome. They are even more welcome of you have owned one or more of the shack in a box type rig, which I define as 80m- 440mhz, all mode.

Thanks in advance!
