JP,
The polite thing to do is to listen and look for a good point to break in. Me
saying good morning to you and having another Ham break in with a comment is
rude, even if it is not meant to be. I listen to 94 more than I talk on it
these days, mainly do to the overuse of the word Comment and the inability of
this repeater to have a QSO. I turn the dial over and find more and more hams
on the other repeaters leaving the Comment crowd to the 94.
have Fun,

For clarification. Sometimes, when you hear a conversation among known friends
that you want to be a part of, you might quickly say "comment" so as to not
double with someone. When you're given the go to talk by somebody already in
the QSO, then you give your call sign. It may not be "by the book," but it is a
polite way of knocking on your friends' "door," rather than breaking it down.
As to the other goings on in this net control string, I think it's pretty well
solved if not amplified beyond its original limits, hurt feelings and all, so
let's all just get over it and move on to something constructive.

Subject: Re: [BVARC] Fw: Monday night net
Good Afternoon,
That is a lot of Drama for a Monday night net. Dwayne does a great job and we
are lucky to have him and all of the other operators as well. Anyone that
regularly visits a net should know that a Net Controller will call for Check in
and should not take check in outside when he is calling for them. That is very
disruptive to the net. Outside an out of date script, which is just a minor
issue, there is a cultural shit on the 94 machine in general.
Several times I would just say good morning to a fellow ham on the 94 and
someone breaks in with COMMENT, not their call sign or emergency traffic, and I
had to wonder what was being discussed in a good morning greeting that would
require a commnet?
On the front end it is a bit rude, on the back end annoying and I tend to just
go about my day. it seems like Instant messenger culture on ham radio. There is
a rule to listen first then transmit doesn't apply evenly across the board some
mornings.
Cultural changes aside, there are many other repeaters and nets that can be
reached and when these start to get annoying, I tend to just turn the dial. The
BVARC net is still a great place to check in and participate, but who really
wants to deal with On the Air Drama?
I think there are a few that need to rework their expectations of the hobby and
learn how to listen before they key the mic. That has probably always been
true. I am sure we have scared off more than one XYL in our days.
If anyone has forgotten this is a hobby and supposed to be fun, then I think
you might not be doing it right. If you got your feelings hurt and need an
apology then ask for one or turn the dial. It"s really not the end of the
world.
BVARC is a great club and the net is as it will be. Drawing in huge numbers
seems like a good thing, but it really depends on the night and what is
happening at the time. As far as I know there is not an official quota for net
participation. I don't ever recall having 90 people show up for a BVARC net.
That would be ridiculous. I think I am good for about 20 minutes on a good day.
I have always found the BVARC net as warm and inviting as any on the air. We
have great topics and run through an efficient program. Feedback is always a
good thing, but it should be constructive and help move things forward.
Have Fun,
Jeff

Dave... Read the script, it is old and needs to be redone...
Parts of it are not even valid.. The net control has to ad-lib a lot of it
and all net controllers do it a little different....
in fact part of the script reads
You do not have to follow the script word for word. Relax, this is a hobby.
If you are going to pick on Dwayne, you have to pick on everyone...
mostly board members that dont even read the script thats on the website...
if any board member had read it recently I am sure it would be changed!!!!
Yes, we should make everyone feel welcome.... Rewrite the script,
coach the net control operators..
Dont complain about a volunteer which this club is lucky to have...
Thanks to Dwayne, this problem might finally get fixed..

As a BVARC board member, I am concerned that anyone should be discouraged from
any of our activities.
There is NOTHING is the Monday Night or daily STIR CRAZY scripts that states
that "In-and-Outs" are to be excluded so don't bother to check in.
As one of the net controls, I have often experienced operators who checked into
the net as a "In-and Out" later come back to participate.
As net control operators, we need to be mindful that we are the voice of BVARC,
To those who were offended by this incident, please accept my apology that you
were discouraged from checking into one of our nets.
I can assure you that I will address this occurrence at the upcoming meeting of
the BVARC Board of Directors.

Rodney, and the club
I am a long long time BVARCer, but I am not a BVARC board member, and I have
never been
net control..
I agree with your points!
I think the club needs to refresh the outline and goals for the monday night
net.
Years ago it was more fun... The same net controller DWAYNE (KB5YTA)
used to do the net EVERY MONDAY..
Now I think they rotate and its once a month...
I can remember Dwayne pulling in 80 or nearly 90 checkins each net...
It was a ritual to get checked in on the monday night net.
Nowdays we are lucky to get 20ish checkins...
And your points may be part of the problem!!
The net has changed...
My wife as well (KF5GWZ) told me to check her in last night... I didnt bother
doing so
nor did I check myself in....
Don't lay it all on Dwayne, he is a volunteer, he is doing what he thinks is
good..
We are lucky to have volunteers like Dwayne...
Thanks for voicing your opinions..
Maybe these messages will change things..
Dont give up.. !!

So I have an issue here about tonight's Net Control management.
He starts off the check-ins basically saying that if you don't have anything to
contribute, don't bother checking in. Then later in the transmissions he
basically said to one check-in that he didn't want "check-ins, and outs".
BVARC Team, this is not right. Many people want to check in to register their
monitoring of the net. Many of them just want to listen and LEARN. I had my
General Class wife all set up to check in for the first time. After she heard
that, she just went into the next room. She wants to drop her membership now.
I don't think some board members will really care. I know one wont. And
telling the one person that he was dis-invited from doing a "Check-in, Check
out" was out of line in my opinion. He probably just wanted to be a part of
the BVARC team. Do you seriously think he will contribute in the future after
that embarrassment?
If BVARC wants new members, or to retain current members, we need to be more
inclusive, and allow new members to at least try to be inclusive. We are not a
military operation. I served, and know the difference. We are a club of Hams
that want to have fun.
Please straighten this out, or post your rules for what any Hams can, or cannot
say in check-ins. But please, lighten up, and allow new Hams to become happily
participating members.
