has all the info you would need to get started.

Set your location, pick one of the frequencies listed nearby, key it into your
radio, and listen!

To transmit back once you hear something you want to engage with, set your
radio to duplex mode (receive on different freq. than transmit), program that
CTCSS tone shown on the repeater’s site in your radio as well as the offset
(for example, receiving 146.94MHz minus 0.6MHz = transmit on 146.34MHz).

How do you get on a repeater, and where do you find them? Can I do that with a
hand held?

Don't feel bad, we all felt that way when we first got licensed. Just get on
the frequency that your license allows and call CQ. Or find a conversation that
seems what you like and break into it. Nothing special about having a
conversation on the radio. Just talk normal and remember to ID every 10 minutes
with your call sign.

Remember that if you're on a repeater, you need to limit your transmissions to
3 minutes or else the timeout timer may get you...

Subject: [BVARC] How to HAM?

First, let me preface my request for help by saying that I am a Mechanical
Engineer and I still have no idea what is going on. I collect lots of data on
rotating and fixed equipment, and I understand Control systems just enough to
be dangerous.

That said, I have had my General license for almost a year, and I still have no
idea how to operate a ham radio, how to communicate with anyone or find
channels to communicate on. I freely admit that the amount of time that I spend
trying to learn is minimal, because of other priorities at the moment. I don’t
have any friends who are into ham, and I am rarely able to make BVARC functions
like the POTA.

How in the world do you get started if you don’t know where to begin? Sorry, I
am just lost.
