Subject: Follow up from bworks student
To: BWorks Helpdesk

Dear Bworks Folks,

Robert Citek suggested I email to bring up some issues I've noticed
after <student> received her computer from Bworks. Just so you know
how it went for one person.

1) she immediately set up her old, cheap keyboard instead of the one
provided. Two months later, after the delete key is stuck in the down
position, she maintains she can't plug in the keyboard from Bworks,
"there's a piece of cardboard covering the area in the back of the
computer, and the plug doesn't fit." Whatever that means.

2) she also "personalized" the screen and it now has some constant,
wavy, jiggly facing running vertically on the screen. She maintains it
was always jiggly, but that's not what I remember.

3) She also went to Bebo and put on some inappropriate (for a 12-year
old) photos. She made up a persona, and received responses from
several people her mother didn't know, one a 20-something serviceman.
Her family and I have talked and talked with her about safety.

4) Her mother and I want to put on some parental controls, because
once the computer is booted up, you can access the Net without a
password. I spent almost 4 hours yesterday trying to set something up,
to no avail.

This morning, Robert suggested I try to find 'Dan's Guardian' for
Linex to install, as Yahoo only supports Windows.

5) Do you ever provide follow up to see if any of the recipients
actually achieve network status?

6) As a Mac user, I plan to spend my morning trying to find a $300
machine. All <student> needs is a word processing program to go with
her printer, internet access, and parental controls. Any ideas?

I can't believe the schools assume that all inner city children have
internet and computer access. It's nuts. No child left behind...

Thanks for all you do!
