I have a hard time with code that looks like this (follows PEP8):
http://src.opensolaris.org/source/xref/caiman/slim_source/usr/src/lib/install_transfer/ips.py#238
There's a TON of wasted white-space for the sake of following pep8 to
the letter.
This is totally subjective of course, but for function calls like
what's in ips.py, I would prefer for a simple 4 space indent with
additional indents as the line continues again.
I agree about the wasted white space. Although my approach at that point
is generally "if it's indented that much before I've typed a single
letter, it probably needs a re-factor"
For situations where it's really not possible (due to time restraints or
technical issues or whatever), I agree with Drew that the "Readability
counts" clause of PEP-8 supersedes the "align with the opening
parentheses" clause.
