I have used a hand held mic, one on a cord and a headset. Each is good for
different reasons. Hand held, you can move around the floor calling and
watching the dancers but it is cumbersome to teach with. Remaining on stage
with a mic on a stand is fine after you have taught the dance, prompted and
dropped out, I like to go down on the floor and watch the dancers. My favorite
is the headset because it is "hands free" for teaching, good to prompt, if
needed from the floor, and with you the entire evening. You can turn it off/on
as needed and you can join in the dance and call if you need to. Of course,
all these options are just subjective to what I have experienced. Hope this
helps.

Subject: Re: [Callers] wireless mics - headsets or handhelds?

I've usually preferred a hand held mic most of the time, It just feels more
natural to me and less "rock star" like. I like to move around a lot as I
teach and call, so this usually works. Our local family dances rarely have
more than 30 dancers, so I usually call from the set with no mic.

I recently had to use a headset to lead some Civil War dancing for 8th
graders with the Dodworth Saxhorn Band. We had to have the dancers line up
perpendicular to the band, so the head of the set was not near the conductor's
mic. I borrowed a vocalist's headset to use. It worked really well, except the
transmission unit kept coming lose as I capered around. There wasn't a good
place on my costume to anchor it.

Your choice.
