I know it was rather blanket, but so far the Cisco's themselves don't seem to have any problem talking to each other, and I hate to see people suffering the same thing I did, i.e. scratching my head in despair :-P. Since we last tried (many months ago) I have a way to do a tcpdump through my switch, would it help you to fix it by do a dump to a flaky 5400 (which I know will crash) ?

Well, I think it was rather a blanket statement to say the 5400 crashes. Cisco have produced some really flaky T.38 software, and some good stuff. I don't think the issue is 5300 vs 5400, but which software revision they are running. One would hope that new versions become more polished. Sadly, it seems more erratic than that.
