Sunday, September 21, 2008 Drug mules returning from Cambodia arrested in southern Taiwan By Han Nai-kuo Taipei, Sept. 19 (CNA) - The Criminal Investigation Bureau announced Friday that a police task force had arrested two drug mules returning from Cambodia a day earlier and seized 835 grams of pure heroin.A spokesman for the bureau said that the task force -- formed after police received tips about a cross-border drug trafficking ring -- consisted of officers from the bureau's third brigade and police units in Keelung, northern Taiwan, and in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan.After learning that the ring's leader, a 45-year-old man identified by the surname Hsiang, went to Cambodia again with his girlfriend from China on Sept. 10, the task force began to place them under surveillance. Upon their return at Kaohsiung International Airport Thursday, the couple were subjected to a body search, leading to the discovery of 835 grams of pure herion in the heels of the shoes of Hsiang's girlfriend, identified by her surname Li.According to the spokesman, the trafficking ring has brought at least NT$100 million worth of heroin into Taiwan by using people with no criminal records as drug mules, paying each of them NT$100,000 for a successful trip, plus an all expenses-paid holiday in Cambodia.After returning from Cambodia, the drug mules would ride a high speed train from Kaohsiung to Taoyuan in northern Taiwan to deliver the drugs to members of Hsiang's ring, the spokesman said.The Criminal Investigation Bureau is still trying to track down the other members of the drug ring. China Finds Chemical in Liquid Milk as Scandal Grows (Update2) By Lee Spears Sept. 19 (Bloomberg) -- China has found the toxic chemical melamine in liquid milk and yogurt from the nation's biggest producers, broadening a scandal in the country's $19 billion dairy industry. Batches made by China Mengniu Dairy Co., Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group Co. and Bright Dairy & Food Co., the country's top three dairy producers by value, contained melamine, the Chinese quality watchdog said, adding to a list of infant formulas already known to be tainted. The discovery of melamine, used to make plastics and tan leather, in additional dairy products raises more questions about how many consumers in China have been exposed to the chemical, which has been linked to kidney failure in babies leading to at least four deaths. Starbucks Corp., the world's biggest coffee- shop chain, today said it has stopped using milk made by Mengniu. ``Our family doesn't drink milk now -- we don't dare,'' 32- year-old Li Cui said today at Beijing's Capital Institute of Pediatrics, where she took her 4-year-old son for a health check because he had been drinking Mengniu and Yili milk. ``The reality is that we cannot trust any brand.'' China's Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has sent officials to 1,548 dairy companies to inspect products for melamine, state-run China Central Television said on its midday news broadcast. Mengniu, Yili and Bright Dairy have issued statements apologizing to customers and pledging to step up quality-assurance measures. Safer Supplies Hohhot, Inner Mongolia-based Mengniu said today it will invest in setting up large cattle ranches to ensure safer supplies of raw milk. The impact of recalls and damage to the company's brand are still being assessed, it said.
