That's what I like about mozilla, it has three options: 1. don't show anything when downloading 2. open the download manager 3. open a progress box
each progress box has an option to close it when done. (a setting which is remembered over all downloads)
I believe these options have to do with the various tastes of people, and cover almost any taste in that way.
