hiding the close button would not be a good idea as people would not know how to close the tab until they mouse over the tab (imagine hiding the close button on a window). As the button would not be visible, even for those who know its here, closing a window would be longer as they would have to search for the button.

Agreed, but then the tab bar looks like a row of icons two per tab (site icon and close icon). The close icon of tab N is closest to the site icon of tab N+1, which seems wrong.


How about:

- Hiding the close icon until mouse over, or

- Putting the site icon and close icon on the same side of each tab.
