I like the new tabs. If the favicons are deemed problems, /they/ should go,
not the close buttons.
But the favicons are the best way to tell which tab is which... the Firefox solution of using just ONE close icon which closes the current tab is a nice one, and leaves the tabs much less cluttered generally. (It is positioned at the right extreme of the row of tabs in Firefox; it would be

What if you modified this a little so that the close box (for the active tab) was displayed slightly below the "tabs" bar, so that it would visually associate with that content. Or, when a tab is selected, have that one expand it bit horizontally (use transparency when it overlays the other tabs please, and an animation for the expansion if you can do it easily with Cocoa..), and have a close box appear in just that one?
