Then pass the information to LaunchServices. There's no perfect
answer, other than everyone fixing their servers, but since that
isn't going to happen, some attempt should be made. Surely
LaunchServices can help out in that respect. It's pretty flexible.
Just a random thought. I usually stay out of the MIME type
discussions when they come up. :-)
