Bruce, What you describe, I'd like to call a "time machine" view. I agree 
it's a pity the web can't cope with the frontiers of storage :). 
I think timelines have a magnitude bigger utility.

Somehow, Google Photos seem to have lost all of 2015 for me :(, as seen on 
this screenshot:
