As I read this I thought of Ian's sailing manual:
If conditions allow, keep sails sheeted, put the helm over and let the boat
keep turning through 360 degrees until situation fully assessed.
Two(?) concerns-
1. Miss the guy in the water! Which way will the boat move - downwind?
2. Don't get dizzy!
