I made 7 bags of Sumbrella fabric with the polyester thread on the home
sewing machine and use a 20x40 5 mil blue tarp.( 5 mil due to weight and
ease of handling)  I replace the tarp as needed.  It takes about 15
minutes to take off and 20 to put on.  The bags cover both exposed ends
of the mast down, bow sprit, and struts using a draw string / elastic
chord to secure them. Covering the boat makes a huge difference in terms
of bird droppings and dirt even within one week here in So. Cal.
Sometimes I get lazy or in a hurry and do not put the cover on.
Cleaning the boat for the next use takes a lot more time than putting
the cover on. So far this year I have been in and out, mast up and down
20 times.

I have used for the last three or four years heavy duty grey tarps from
Tractor Supply.  I just went to order some new ones and find that they
no
longer accept internet or mail orders.  After some searching on Google I
found http://www.tarps.com. They seem to have the most extensive list of
tarps and canopys, etc. including the heavyweight grey ones which last
much longer than the blue. I ordered three; two for the front and back
at
12X20 and one for the middle at 12X24.  The total cost of the order
shipped from South Carolina to Mass was $97.60 (UPS).  This seems like a
pretty good deal.

Subject: Boat cover advice
I am looking for some advice on whether it is necessary, advisable
or even worthwhile to
have a mast up boat cover when drysailing an F-Boat under the Florida
sun. I have had an
F27 since the spring in Canada and will be bringing it down to
Florida for the winter
months ( December to April) where I will sail it occasionally.
My options are:
1- No cover at all. I'm worried about how the nets will be affected
2- A cover over the boom and down  both sides between the cross beams
and covering
the floats.  ( Half cover sunbrella $US 900)
3- A full cover sunbrella ( $US 1800)
4- A $30 blue plastic cover from the local hardware store with holes
cut  to slip over the
upright crossbeams. This would probably cover only the middle portion.
I'm also thinking that a cover might deter theft?
Thanks in advance.
