> Is your tether long enough to allow you to get to the ama? And can you
get to the ama? If not, I bet you will not get back on board.
I have a Mustang tether with three hooks. Generally I keep one end hook and
the middle hook attached to my harness and one on the jackline. That will
not let me get to the ama. If I release the middle hook I can get to the
outside of the ama with the tether at full extension.
The F-24 MKI is entirely different from the F-27 since it doesn't have an
aft cabin. There are pelican hooks on the two lifelines to the aft rail,
and when they are released the rail drops down it forms a swim step. The
cockpit sole is only about six inches above the waterline with the tillier
sticking up in the middle of it. The Lifesling is stored on the aft rail
and would be an obstruction to the swim step, not to mention keeping it
floating at the surface.
I would have to be able to reach up high enough to release the two pelican
hooks. Then it would be a matter of pulling myself over the Lifesling/swim
step and past the tiller to get into the cockpit. If I could release the
straps on the Lifesling, I could use the swim step, too, but as you point
out I might not have the flexibility to do so.
Actually, I suppose it's just habit that I rig the Lifesling when
singlehanding - after all, who's going to deploy it for me? Of course, I
might come across some monohull rail meat that's slipped under the
lifelines, and what would I do then without it?
Like I said, I don't know if I could get back in by myself, and I'm not in a
hurry to find out. Maybe in the summer I'll take the boat into Lake
Washington with a crew and see what it takes.
Cheers,
Tom Speer
