While i haven't tried living full time i certainly have used my boat during the 
winter and during bad weather and i must totally agree with Steve it all looks 
wonderful when the flowers and sun are out BUT ??

  Frankly Dave, you'd be doing your friend a favour by trying to dissuade her
  from this. Living on a narrowboat is not a viable option nowadays as BW
  begin to tighten the screws on residential boaters. And it's not going to
  get any better so unless you have an approved residential mooring in place
  I'd tell her not even to think about it. Even then, I'd tell her to spend a
  couple of weeks on a boat in the winter before she commits. It's all very
  pretty in the sun with the flowers out, but the cut can be a different place
  when it's dark at 3pm and you're knee-deep in mud, struggling to generate
  enough electricity for light.
