Sadly, yes. Usually because the moorings have changed their owner and/or
the site is going to be developed.

I use a Vodaphone 3G/GPRS card, which plugs into my card socket on my
laptop. I've only had it for a few weeks so can't vouch for the
geographical coverage - to date I've only had the chance to try it in
London and the Home Counties where coverage as been (as I expected) pretty
good. If it finds a 3G signal is uses that and gives me 384 Kbps.
Otherwise it defaults to GPRS at about 57 Kbps. I've found the signal more
reliable since I spent £20 on Vodaphone's extension aerial for it, although
I had to try several Vodaphone shops before I found one with it in stock.

As for cost, I was quoted £45 per month for their "unlimited in the UK"
tarriff, and on the tarriff they give you the card itself for free. The £45
figure is distinctly deceptive, as it excludes VAT and a few other odds &
sods, but it actually works out to more like £65 per month which, for the
amount of use I give it, is well worth while. They also have a tarriff
which includes the first X amount of use, but I'm told that the charges if
you go above that level get very steep. And, I believe, you have to poay
for the card if you opt for that tarriff.
