Hi Phil,

That's a very good question. The swim is of an average length, but the size
of prop is in question. It's diameter seems to be 17", with plenty of room
for at least an 18" prop, but as to its pitch...

It does feel about right though as the engine doesn't quite get to maximum
revs, but is not far off (but does in reverse). It starts black smoking just
a few revs off full. With such a noisy engine I would rather overprop it,
than under. I think the main issue is the size of the engine to the size of
the boat. As a very heavy 60 footer (solid construction, residential, and
with over a 300 litre fuel tank, and a really huge watertank) I think it's
just struggling a little. When running light (little fuel, and water) it
does a lot better.

Also, unless the stretch is a deep bit, all I am doing is moving lots of
water about so I do reduce the thottle a little then. Max speed on open
water appears to be about 5.3 mph - it used to be 5.7 after the engine had
an overhaul late 2004, but I don't know if it is just wear and tear or a
problem. The Lister does smoke well, but then they all do to some extent.

Finally - boy I do go on don't I - yesterday I thought I would open her full
down the straight between the Central Line railway bridge (near Northolt) to
Black Horse. The canal along that stretch seems to vary alot, and on the
deeper bits near Lyons Bridge I had a good bow wave (estimate of 4.4 mph as
I didn't have the GPS set up), but it reduced considerably further down
(maybe about 4mph). I wasn't causing a breaking wash at any point, but a
hump was created on the slower bits!
