My feeling is that simpler / older systems may require more routine 
maintenance but more easily dealt with by the average owner e.g. a coal 
stove requires a lot of daily attention but is not liable to the complex 
problems of a modern diesel boiler, and there's not much to go wrong on 
a bucket-and-chuckit! I suspect the same applies to most boat systems 
such as electrics and engines.
