News filters back about some "excitement" yesterday (5th) involving nb
JOLA No 6 which set off from Sharpness on the afternoon tide bound for
Portishead.
Apparently they encountered some rough weather in the area of the
Severn crossings and the cratch cover or front glass was breached
resulting in shipping a large quantity of water. One report suggested
that a hanging basket may have smashed the perspex front panel. Another
report suggested that water entered the boat through the pump out
breather, and then through the WC pan ! By all accounts the boat had
about 5 or 6 inches of water aboard and unsurprisingly, took a list.
Emergency services were called and I believe a rescue boat attended,
but JOLA made it to Portishead.
It is reported that JOLA was one of two boats that set off yesterday,
in company, and sharing a pilot who was aboard the other boat. A source
suggested that the alarm was raised not by the pilot but via another
boat in the same cruising group of 4 boats from Braunston (Merlin Boats
!) which was planning to do the trip today.
Since I was aware of another party planning the trip about this time I
checked with nb Hampshire and was pleased to find they were already in
Bath and had a really smooth and enjoyable experience in a convoy of 4
on Monday, despite some pre trip anxiety among the crews.
Apologies if any of the details prove to be incorrect, the essential
story is as described.
Beeky, Sharpness, pottering, BBQ soon.
