I last saw one as a child - it looked bigger then... There are quite a 
number of moth caterpillars which grow to that size (and some of the 
hawk-moths are larger) - the caterpillar is quite a bit bigger than the 
final moth as it has to store all the fat etc. which will be needed to 
fuel metamorphosis in the pupa, as well as a lot of its volume being 
vegetation-filled gut (which is why they make such a mess of you squash 
one) which is of course deleted in the moth.
