Actually I found jumping from the bow of the boat with a windlass and 
rope in one hand whilst trying grasp the metal rail in top of the lock 
wall with the other quite, erm, exciting! The total absence of bollards 
or of any way to cross at the top end of a lock in the flight is equally 
astonishing.

Yes, for once it was running very well. Must be the clean Peak District 
air. Conversely a boat who had followed a good few hundred yards behind 
me on the way north from Stoke last Thursday asked to go ahead in 
Harecastle on the way north because of the smoke.
